DEVELOPED SPECIFICALLY TO SUIT YOUR STORY

We believe in working with our clients to ensure that the designs and illustrations created suit their vision and bring their stories to life. Throughout the illustration and design process we meet with our clients frequently to review progress, make edits and discuss how we can make their project have the greatest impact. We happily provide guidance and advice to self-publishing authors so that they have the highest opportunity for success. Each story is unique and has something truly special about it. Using the right visual language helps express that uniqueness to the right audience in a way that resonates with them.

The Name I Call myself by hasan namir

Illustration

Soon to be Published by Arsenal Pulp Press “The Name I Call Myself” written by Hasan Namir with illustrations by Cathryn John, is a coming of age story about Ari, a young child who struggles with gender identity. This has been one of our favourite illustration pieces because of the ethereal nature of the imagery and the issues that it addresses. This is a coming of age story that tackles self love and self acceptance in a not so friendly world.

Other Books We’ve Worked On

Newport Jane By Katie Bieksa

Cover Design and Illustration

“From the outside, Ellen has it all: a glamorous new life in a sun soaked city more like a movie set than the small Northern town where she grew up, and her very own McDreamy. But being married to a gorgeous, brilliant cardiac surgeon also means standing in his shadow, putting aside her dreams to follow his and having way too much time home alone to thing about how much she’s given up to follow him to California.”

Working with Katie was such a pleasure. This was the very first novel that our founder, Cathryn, designed and Illustrated. It’s what lead Flo. Studios to where we are today.

This book’s cover design marked a turning point in Cathryn’s career and opened up a lot of doors. It also began our community partnership with The Self Publishing Agency.

Finn and the friends of the forest by Julie Flynn

Illustration Assistance and Finalization

Written by Julie Flynn, this book follows Finn, a young boy who was transformed into a mountain adventurer by his wilderness-loving Granny and a magical backpack called BP.

This book showcases the power of teamwork.

Jaz, the original illustrator was strapped for time with too many projects. She turned to us to have the illustrations rendered in the same style as the rest of her work. Jaz was able to provide us with sketched linework for each page and we took on the rest from there. It’s always good to know that your chosen illustrator has a skilled, trusted and easy to work with teammate who can replicate their style. You never know what life may throw their way! At Flo. Studios, Cathryn John and Jess Stanley are able to work together to get each project done beautifully, even if there are unforeseen set backs.

Choose Kind By Jack Strong

Cover Design, Book Design, Cover Illustration

“By doing our part to choose kind in all that we do, we have the power to change the world, and our minds, for the better.”

Written by 9 year old Jack, this book details his thoughts on the world and how we should all Choose Kind!

Flo. Studios worked with Jack to bring to life his vision for Choose Kind, within budget and a tight timeline. This book was a ton of fun to work on, Jack and his mom worked super hard on their end to make sure that the content was strong, edited and captivating. We took inspiration from a few books that Jack provided us as part of our design discovery process.

As with every book, we like to layer in the character of the Author within the design. We care about our clients and want to see them succeed! Each book design process starts with a preliminary direction call to chat about vision, goals and timelines.

Cathy’s Adventures By Jada Waite

Cover Design, Book Design, Illustration Rendering for Print

Cathy’s adventures is a fascinating story that acts as a window into the perspective of a nine year old as they experience the global pandemic caused by Covid-19.

Jada is a prolific writer, with over six hundred pages of stories written out(and counting!)

This particular book runs at 136 pages long and follows the protagonist Cathy as she learns to navigate a rapidly changing world.

With help from Flo. Studios, we turned Jada’s notebook and sketches into a published children’s book with full colour illustrations. We scanned her original illustrations and digitally rendered them with colour to enhance the reader’s experience as they read Jada’s book.

As always, we kept the book within budget and delivered the print-ready files according to our pre-determined schedule.
